"the new york times" this weekend reported on the two campaigns' ongoing debate preps. here is what they said about romney's prep. quote, mr. romney's team has concluded that the debates are about creating moments and has equipped him with a series of zingers he's memorized and has been practicing on aides since august. bob shrum, you have been on that particular role, preparing candidates for debate. what do you make of romney, a rather stiff customer to begin with, coming off as sort of a henny youngman or whatever, some sort of a don rickles with some zingers. i don't think of him as a zinger kind of guy where obama is expected to be left helpless. what do you make of that strategy? >> first of all, if you had it, you wouldn'

're going to play in 33 days if this man is allowed to continue. joining me now, bob shrum, democratic strategist, senior adviser to the kerry and gore campaigns who also ran ted kennedy's campaign against romney in 1994. he's writing in the daily beast oig today saying romney won the debate, but it was no game changer. and jared bernstein, msnbc contributor and former chief economist for vice president joe biden. bb, let me start with you. what are your thoughts? >> first of all, romney won a victory that was a victory of performance art built on a whole set of lies. i think people have counted up to 28 to 30 lies. and i actually think the president deserves some credit for at a couple of critical points holding romney accountable. it's a big victory to get romney to own voucher care as a replacement for medicare and the president also took romney on when he said no one over 65 will be affected because of the rebeautiful obamacare in fact as the president pointed out, seniorses will pay $600 more for prescription drugs and the medicare trust if you said will expire eight years sooner.

, a newspaper poll released over the weekend put the democrat in that race bob casey ahead of his republican challenger by eight points. as mitt romney's, shall we say, second place standing starts to look like more and more of a permanent residence as it seems like a long shot for winning the presidency, the down ticket effect of that is starting to become a bigger part of the conversation. you saw a manifestation of that last week on this show when nancy pelosi came on this show and said, essentially, democrats can win back the house. nancy pelosi said not only is she confident that democrats can get the 25 seats they need to take e back control of the house, which is a huge number, she says she, quote, liked to have 35 seats, which would be a lot. and while it is news worthy that the democrats think they can take back the house, it should be said that a number of other observers looking at the same prospect are call k the idea that the democrats could take back the house pretty much impossible. politico publishing a piece on it. one of the consequences of republicans winning so many seats
